BAB BOWL XXX

Bab Bowl XXX took place on May 22nd, 2009. The Crusade expansion was used for a seventh time. This game used a deck size of 100 cards. As of Bab Bowl XXV, using a Crusade deck is optional. This game was a scenario game where the Shadow War was to be expected since we declared which of the 3 sides we were going to play.

Sean = Centauri (Londo) + Shadows
Simon = Humans (Sheridan) + B5
JP = Minbari (Delenn) + Vorlons

Final Score (Total points in all Bab Bowls in brackets)

JP = 29 (530)
Sean = 10 (483)
Simon = 0 (500)

The longest game ever! JP won another major victory with a straightforward Minbari/Vorlon deck that used primarily characters, fleets and conflicts. Simon worked at raising B5 influence to go for a power victory. Sean went with a classic Centauri/Shadow deck that raised Shadow influence. JP collected only influence so when the power limiting cards were slapped down on Sean and Simon, things got hairy. The game lasted more than 7 hours when we decided to call it a night (almost 3AM).

Simon was about to run out of cards so in the end, he had to forfeit. Sean was stuck at 10 influence and could outlast JP in card draws with Imperial Telepaths. JP could keep pounding on either of us for a while, but he had already fulfilled the Major Victory conditions by that time.

Koodos to JP for his 3rd M.V. in the last 5 games. Unprecedented in our 30-game history.
Ranking (Major Victories, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in brackets)

Simon = 69 points (4-7-9-10)
JP = 68 points (4-5-12-9)
Sean = 60 points (1-8-10-11)

BAB BOWL XXIX

Bab Bowl XXIX took place on April 25th, 2009. The Crusade expansion was used for a sixth time. This game used a deck size of 100 cards. As of Bab Bowl XXV, using a Crusade deck is optional.

Sean = Minbari (Delenn)
Simon = Humans (Clark)
JP = Centauri (Londo)

Final Score (Total points in all Bab Bowls in brackets)

JP = 28 (501)
Sean = 23 (473)
Simon = 16 (500)

The longest game in recent memory. Simon played a Clark/Shadow deck with Managed Growth as his agenda. JP replaced Londo with Councilor La'Shan and caused not small matter of headaches for all of us. I went with a Minbari / TechnoMage / Ranger strategy. JP started the Shadow War only to cancel it a few turns later. Quite the bold move.

Ranking (Major Victories, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in brackets)

Simon = 68 points (4-7-9-9)
JP = 63 points (3-5-12-9)
Sean = 58 points (1-8-9-11)

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Next Game - April 25th, 2009

Tonight, Bab Bowl 29 will take place with the following factions:

Basic Deck Building

Deck building is an art. It can seem great on paper but suck royally in a game. Your starting hand sets the tone for the entire game.

According to the rulebook, a starting hand can include the following cards:
  • Starting Ambassador
  • Ambassador's Assistant
  • Homeworld
  • Agenda
The problem with this basic combo is that it might take a couple of turns to get 3 cards on the table and to play the Homeworld, 10 influence must be used, which take at least 6 turns to reach.

Another philosophy is to add cards that can all be played quickly for maximum effect. Something in I did in Bab Bowl 23. I played all 4 cards in the first turn. Can't always do this, but it sure is fun to have an empty hand so quickly. However, you are now at the mercy of your deck and good cards coming out to continue your quest for victory.

Next Game - Bab Bowl 29

The great buildup to Bab Bowl XXX continues next time with the following races:

Sean = Minbari with Delenn
Simon = Humans with Clark
JP = Centauri with Londo

This winner will get to choose his side first for the "Great War Spectacular". A lot rides on this one. Everybody has to bring their A-game to BB 29!

House Rule

After much debate during Bab Bowl 28, we have established the following house rule (if it isn't already stated in a rulebook or errata):

"Any conflict that does not provide a gain of influence does not allow the use of the homeworld to gain +1 additional influence."

This rule comes from the fact that we have always played Trade Pacts and used the homeworld's +1 influence ability to gain a quick influence boost. This way, a Trade Pact becomes less useful unless a strategy requires it.

BAB BOWL XXVIII

Bab Bowl XXVIII took place on March 27th, 2009. The Crusade expansion was used for a fifth time. This game used a deck size of 100 cards. As of Bab Bowl XXV, using a Crusade deck is optional.

Sean = Humans (Clark)
Simon = Narn
JP = Minbari (Neroon)

Final Score (Total points in all Bab Bowls in brackets)

Simon = 20 (484)
JP = 19 (473)
Sean = 16 (450)

A great game all around. Simon won by gaining influence only through conflicts. Quite the feat! The Minbari pounded the crap out of the Humans due to a low military buildup. The Narn stood up to the Minbari and fought very well. Overall, no game has ever resulted in so many conflicts being attempted: some were foiled!!! :-)

Ranking (Major Victories, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in brackets)

Simon = 67 points (4-7-9-8)
JP = 58 points (2-5-12-9)
Sean = 56 points (1-8-8-11)

Friday, March 27, 2009

Next Game - March 27th 2009

Tonight, Bab Bowl 28 will take place with the following factions:

Sean = Humans (Clark)
Simon = Narn
JP = Minbari (Neroon)

I am looking forward to this game. Whoever wins tonight will have first pick of a faction for BB 29 which is a huge advantage towards the faction choice for the big BB 30 showdown.

Stayed tuned for the recap this weekend.

BAB BOWL XXVII

Bab Bowl XXVII took place on March 6th, 2009. The Crusade expansion was used for a fourth time. This game used a deck size of 100 cards. As of Bab Bowl XXV, using a Crusade deck is optional.

Simon = Humans
JP = Non-Aligned

Final Score (Total points in all Bab Bowls in brackets)

Sean = 21 (434)
JP = 18 (454)
Simon = 10 (464)

A good solid victory for Sean using the "Support of the Mighty" agenda.

Ranking (Major Victories, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in brackets)

Simon = 64 points (4-6-9-8)
JP = 56 points (2-5-11-9)
Sean = 55 points (1-8-8-10)

Preparations for BAB BOWL XXX

After BB 26, we discussed the possibility of doing another scenario game for BB 30. The scenario would be an all-out Shadow war with a Major Victory as the only type of victory. Basically, a Vorlon player, a Shadow player and a B5 player duking it out for supremacy. Can't wait!

House Rules

As is common in many games, a set of house rules is developed to make the game better or easier to play. We have come up with a few that might be interesting to others.

1- Combo Rule: A player can combine several actions together into a single operation. For example, several cards can be rotated to reduce the cost of the card that the ambassador will sponsor. This makes for quicker rounds and faster gameplay.

2- Faction Selection: The winner of a Bab Bowl has the first pick of a faction for the next game. The second place finisher comes next followed by the third place finisher. This provides an incentive to win any one game because you can choose your next faction without restriction.

3- Rules Judgments: When a rule or card effect is contested, the official rules and errata are consulted and a judgment is rendered by the nominated judge or by committee. If a conflict involves 2 factions, the 3rd player must act as an impartial judge if a rule is misunderstood or challenged.

Nex Skirmish Part 2

Well, we finally got to do our next skirmish in Feb 20, 2009! It was a blast. The details will be given in the upcoming Bab Bowl XXVI recap. We decided after the game to refer to each session as a Bab Bowl with the Roman numerals. Cool idea! :-) Stay tuned for the recap of each one. Bab Bowl XXXVII is scheduled for March 6th, 2009.
